ATAK PLUGIN · LOW-BANDWIDTH TRANSPORT
v1.0 · RELEASED Q2 2026

StarSync ATAK Plugin

Encrypted ATAK CoT over SMS — the lowest-bandwidth transport in tactical comms. Works on every cellular generation (5G, 4G LTE, 3G, 2G/GSM) and on direct-to-cell satellite carriers. Built for the moments data fails: saturated towers, deprioritized roaming, dead zones, or anywhere data costs more than it's worth. No data plan, no cloud relay, no infrastructure.

HOW STARSYNC WORKS

Low-bandwidth comms, finally plug-and-play.

Direct-to-cell satellite SMS is the cheapest off-grid comms ever built — but the engineering to make it carry encrypted ATAK CoT is non-trivial. StarSync hides the complexity. The team installs, scans a QR, and the picture flows.

01 THE PROBLEM

The data plan is the first thing to fail.

When 50,000 phones overrun a tower, data dies before the towers do — but SMS keeps moving on the cellular control channel. When you cross past the cell grid entirely, you're dark unless you're carrying a satellite terminal. Either way, the team's CoT picture goes flat right when it matters most.

02 THE CAPABILITY

SMS is the most resilient transport in tactical comms.

Every cellular generation since 1992 carries SMS — 2G/GSM, 3G, 4G LTE, 5G — and so do modern direct-to-cell satellite carriers. SMS rides the control channel: separate from data, prioritized for delivery, the last thing to die when networks fail. StarSync rides whatever leg is alive — saturated cell, 3G fallback, satellite — without an Iridium terminal, roof antenna, or second device. Hardware cost: zero. Bandwidth cost: a few SMS.

03 THE SOLUTION

ATAK CoT, packed into encrypted SMS. Bidirectional. Including health data.

StarSync intercepts every CoT event in ATAK — PLI, GeoChat, SOS, routes, shapes, markers — serializes to compact protobuf, encrypts with AES-256-GCM, and ships over SMS. The receiving plugin reverses the path and the marker lands on the team's map. HAIL physiological data from operator smartwatches feeds the same pipeline — heart rate, injury status, location all flow as encrypted SMS to the COP.

04 THE EASE

Plug-and-play. Five minutes to fielded.

Setup feels like configuring a messaging app — because that's exactly what it is, with the encrypted ATAK pipeline hidden underneath. Install, scan a QR, and the team is on net in five minutes. No certificates. No field engineer. No infrastructure to stand up. The same setup that took a comms officer two days last decade fits in a coffee break now.

05 THE INTEGRATION

TAK Server bridges every operator — IP and SMS, on the same screen.

Add a phone-number gateway to your TAK Server and StarSync becomes the federation glue between connected and SMS-only operators. The HQ comms NCO sees field SMS units on the same Common Operating Picture as IP-connected EUDs — one TAK_OS server, two transports, every CoT event flowing both ways. The gap between the wire and the wireless closes.

CAPABILITIES

Encrypted CoT over SMS — bidirectional, low-bandwidth, no infrastructure.

01 / AES-256-GCM

AES-256-GCM Encrypted Transport

Every CoT event is serialized to compact protobuf, encrypted with AES-256-GCM (12-byte IV, 16-byte auth tag), and sent over standard SMS. Shared passphrase derives the key — same passphrase on both ends, no certificate exchange, no key server.

02 / NETWORK-AWARE

Network-Aware Across Every Generation

Auto-detects every cellular generation (5G, 4G LTE, 3G, 2G/GSM) and direct-to-cell satellite legs (T-Mobile / Starlink T-Sat, AST SpaceMobile, Apple Globalstar). Operators don't pick a leg — StarSync rides whichever transport the modem can reach and surfaces it in the device list.

03 / FULL

Full CoT Type Support

Position reports (PLI), GeoChat text, SOS alerts, routes, shapes, markers, video links, and HAIL data — all encoded in protobuf for compact wire format. Generic CoT XML falls back to gzip + Base64 for any unknown type.

04 / MULTI-DESTINATION

Multi-Destination Broadcast

Send PLI, alerts, and chat to multiple phone numbers in one operation — comma-separated destination list in preferences. Each message replicates across the team without requiring a TAK Server in the middle.

05 / BANDWIDTH-AWARE

Bandwidth-Aware Rate Limiting

PLI transmission is rate-limited per contact (default 15s) so a busy team doesn't burn through SMS budget. GeoChat and SOS alerts bypass the limiter so urgent traffic always lands. Live countdown timer in the plugin pane shows time-to-next.

06 / QR

QR Code Team Provisioning

Encode every plugin setting — destination phones, encryption passphrase, TX interval — into a QR. Scan it on every team device to bring the unit online in seconds. No shared docs, no copy-paste mistakes.

07 / RESILIENT

Resilient on Saturated Networks

When 50,000 phones overrun a tower's data backhaul — stadiums, festivals, mass-casualty incidents, multi-agency responses — the data plan collapses but SMS keeps moving on the cellular control channel. StarSync rides that path, so the team's PLI, GeoChat, and SOS land when nothing else does.

RESILIENCE

Designed for the moment data fails.

Modern tactical comms assume bandwidth. SMS doesn't. It rides the cellular control channel on every generation (5G/4G/3G/2G), survives saturation when the data plane collapses, and works on direct-to-cell satellite carriers when there's no tower at all. Four resilience tiers, one transport, every operator stays on net.

01
CELLULAR · ANY CARRIER

Standard cellular SMS

Every cellular generation: 2G/GSM, 3G, 4G LTE, 5G. SMS rides the control channel — separate from data and prioritized for delivery, even when the data plane is congested or deprioritized to nothing.

SMS · PRIMARY
02
SATURATED · CONTROL-CHANNEL

When 50,000 phones overrun the tower.

Stadiums. Festivals. Mass-casualty incidents. Multi-agency responses. The data plane collapses first — SMS rides the control channel and keeps the team's CoT picture moving when nothing else does.

SMS · STILL FLOWING
03
DIRECT-TO-CELL · LEO

No tower? No problem.

T-Mobile / Starlink T-Satellite, AST SpaceMobile, Apple Globalstar, and the carriers behind them. Modern direct-to-cell sat networks deliver SMS to a stock smartphone — no terminal, no antenna. StarSync auto-detects T-Sat and rides it the moment the operator crosses out of cell coverage.

SMS · AUTO-DETECT
04
MMS · TRANSPARENT FALLBACK

Bigger payloads keep moving too.

Routes, shapes, and large CoT payloads exceed SMS's 153-character ceiling. StarSync auto-fragments into multipart SMS and falls back to MMS for the largest events — transparent to the operator, no extra config, no manual size checks.

AUTO-SWITCH

Verified on production builds. The plugin uses the device's native SMS stack — if the modem can send SMS, StarSync can use it.

OPERATIONAL FLOW

How a CoT becomes an SMS becomes a marker.

Five stages from Operator A's tap to Operator B's map. Each stage shrinks the payload, hardens it, and keeps it moving — what travels is barely bigger than a text message.

STAGE 01

CoT event

~1.2 KB · XML T+0 ms
STAGE 02

Protobuf encode

0x0A 14 P L I 12 04 38 39
~84 bytes T+12 ms
STAGE 03

AES-256-GCM

IV(12) ‖ ciphertext ‖ tag(16)
~112 bytes T+18 ms
STAGE 04

Base64 + SMS

k7+8aLm2Yp...zQ==
~150 chars · 1 SMS T+22 ms → carrier
STAGE 05

Decrypt + inject

marker · PLI · 38.9°N · live
CoT on map T+~1.6 s
End-to-end ~1.6 sec

Plugin overhead is ~22ms. The rest is carrier transit — same as any text message.

Wire size ~150 chars

From a 1.2KB CoT XML down to a single 150-character SMS — 88% reduction.

Encryption AES-256-GCM

Authenticated encryption with a 16-byte tag. Tampering is detected before injection.

Direction Bidirectional

Same pipeline runs in reverse on the receiving device. PLI, GeoChat, SOS, routes, HAIL — all flow both ways.

08 · QUESTIONS

Any carrier. Every generation. 5G, 4G LTE, 3G, 2G/GSM — if the modem can send SMS, StarSync rides it. Same for direct-to-cell satellite: T-Mobile / Starlink T-Satellite (auto-detected), AST SpaceMobile, Apple Globalstar, and every carrier launching on top of them. The plugin uses the device's native SMS stack — no allowlist, no approved-carrier list. What the phone can text, StarSync can carry.

No. Any Android EUD already running ATAK 5.4+ with cellular SMS capability is enough. No Iridium handset, no roof antenna, no $5K dedicated terminal. Hardware cost of going off-grid is $0 + the phone you already field.

Yes — AES-256-GCM with a shared team passphrase. Each message carries a fresh 12-byte IV and a 16-byte authentication tag. Tampering is detected before the CoT event is injected on the receiving device. Keys are derived deterministically via SHA-256 of the passphrase, so peer plugins and TAK Server gateways stay in sync without certificate exchange.

PLI (position), GeoChat, SOS alerts, routes, shapes, markers, video links, and HAIL physiological / smartwatch data — heart rate, injury status, location all flow through the same encrypted SMS pipeline. Unknown CoT XML types fall back to gzip + Base64 so nothing gets dropped.

Yes — and this is where StarSync closes the gap. Add a phone-number gateway to your TAK Server (TAK_OS or any provider) and the server federates IP-connected ATAK devices with SMS-only operators on the same Common Operating Picture. CoT flows both ways through the gateway. The HQ comms NCO sees the field SMS units alongside the wired team — one server, two transports.

A PLI fits in 1 SMS (~150 chars). GeoChat fits in ~2 SMS. Routes and shapes auto-fragment into multipart SMS or fall back to MMS for the largest payloads. Plugin rate-limits PLI to 15-second intervals per contact by default — plan around ~4 SMS per minute per operator on active ops, well under any modern SMS plan.

Yes. StarSync is software-only — no hardware, no ITAR concerns. The plugin runs on stock Android EUDs, and modern handsets from approved vendors satisfy NDAA Section 889 / EAR-99 / TAA requirements. Built and signed in-house in Virginia Beach. We can sign a compliance attestation per deployment.

$150 / device / year. Single tier. Volume pricing kicks in for fleets of 10+ devices. Activation key arrives by email within 2 minutes of purchase; the plugin validates an Ed25519 JWT signature offline and binds to the device's hardware ID. Annual renewal on the activation anniversary. Transferable with a support ticket.
