Why the UV-50PRO
A handheld runs five watts into a stubby antenna and gives up the moment terrain gets in the way. The UV-50PRO puts ^fifty watts^ behind a real antenna from the truck or the base station, carries ^GPS and APRS^ so the net can see where everyone is, and programs ^from your phone over Bluetooth^ instead of a menu tree.

Licensing, range, power and how it reaches TAK.
Do I need a licence to transmit?+
Yes. The UV-50PRO is an amateur (ham) radio covering the 2 m and 70 cm amateur bands, and transmitting needs an amateur licence. It is not a GMRS radio and may not be used on GMRS.
How does it work with ATAK?+
Add the Radio Relay ATAK Plugin above. The radio pairs to the EUD over Bluetooth and carries position and chat into TAK with no data connection. The plugin is sold here as a one-year or three-year licence for this radio.
What range should I expect?+
BTECH's own estimates: 5 to 20+ miles mobile to mobile in the open, 1 to 10 miles through terrain and buildings, and 20 to 50+ miles to a good repeater site, with high sites reaching further. Antenna height matters more than watts.
What do I need to run it at home?+
13.8 V power and an antenna. BTECH sells a regulated AC-DC supply for base use; in a vehicle it wires to 12 V. The mounting bracket and hardware are in the box; an antenna and mount are not.
Is it weatherproof?+
It is rated IP54, which covers dust and splashes from any direction, and it operates from -5°F to 140°F. It is not a submersible radio.
Can I program it from my phone?+
Yes. The free BTECH UV Programmer app for iOS and Android pairs over Bluetooth to edit channels, tones, offsets and zones, import and export CSV for fleets, and push firmware updates.
Is this the radio in the GoTAK Radio Manpack?+
Yes. The Radio Manpack is built around this 50-watt UV-50PRO as a deployable cross-band repeater node in an Armoloq frame on a Kydex battery, bridged into TAK. See the Radio Manpack.
